Wire harness drawing checklist

What a cable or wire harness drawing needs to show so it can be quoted and built right the first time.

A wire harness can only be built as well as it is documented. Before you send a harness for quotation, check that your drawing answers these questions.

Wires and cables

  • Wire gauge, insulation type, and color for every conductor
  • Cut lengths, with tolerances, measured between clearly marked points
  • Twisted pairs, shielding, and where shields are terminated

Connectors and terminations

  • Manufacturer part numbers for every connector, terminal, and seal
  • A pinout table: which wire goes to which cavity at each end
  • Sealing requirements, for example an IP67 rating

Routing and protection

  • Branch points and breakout lengths
  • Sleeving, tape, heat shrink, or conduit, and where each one starts and stops
  • Labels: text, position, and orientation

Quality and test

  • The workmanship class required under IPC-A-620
  • Electrical tests to perform, such as continuity on every circuit
  • Any pull-force requirements on crimps

If you do not have a drawing yet, send us a sketch and the connector part numbers. Our engineers can help with connector selection, sealing, and routing, and produce the drawing with you.
